Prevention of Major Depression in Complex Medically Ill Patients: Preliminary Results From a Randomized, Controlled Trial Depression is highly prevalent in patients with physical illness and is associated with diminished quality of life and poorer medical outcome. The authors evaluated a results of a multifaceted intervention by a psychiatric consultation/liaison nurse with diabetes and rheumatology outpatients followed for 1 year. There was an overall effect for the intervention, but the effect was seen only in diabetes, and not in rheumatology patients. Pain and Depression in Gynecology Patients The authors evaluated the prevalence of pain, depression, and their co-occurrence in gynecology patients, and their association with other, comorbid mental disorders. In a group of 1,647 patients, moderate-to-severe pain was reported in 29%; depression, in 21%, and both present in 10.3%. Comorbid pain and depression was associated with anxiety, suicidal or death ideation, functional impairment, interpersonal distress, and physical or sexual abuse. READ MORE
