Symptoms of depression and distress, associated with poor outcomes, are often underrecognized in medical settings. Authors examined the effect of having immediate mental-health screening on-site in an urban cardiology clinic. *Breast Cancer and Psychosocial Factors: Early Stressful Life Events, Social Support, and Well-Being
In a sample of 300 breast cancer (BC) patients and 305 control subjects, authors examined the relationship between earlier stress and later BC development, correlating stress, social support, and well-being in childhood and adolescence with BC in adulthood. Paradoxically, BC patients with higher historical stress levels reported greater social support and well-being. These findings may reflect a tendency toward a repressive coping style among BC patients. READ MORE *
 
*Factitious Disorder in Children and Adolescent: A Retrospective Study
Epidemiological and clinical data about factitious disorder (FD) in pediatric practice are lacking. The authors studied prevalence of FD among referrals to a child-and-adolescent consultation-liaison service: one sample (N=1,684) from 1992 to 2003, and another from a tertiary-care child center (N=12,081) from 2003 to 2005. Prevalence ranged from 0.7% in the first sample to 0.03% in the second, similar to the frequency found in adult patients, and with many of the same clinical characteristics. READ MORE *
